Kanha National Park, situated in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most popular destinations for wildlife lovers, especially those hoping to see tigers. Recently, an important update has come regarding the tiger safari experience. As per a directive from the Supreme Court, night safaris in the national park have now been stopped. Earlier, along with regular daytime safaris, visitors were also allowed to explore the buffer zone even at night, but this option is no longer available. Prior to this decision, night safari activities were conducted in the buffer zone of Kanha Tiger Reserve. Tourists could enter the forest through the Khatia, Sijhora, and Khapa gate areas and explore wildlife after sunset, including the possibility of spotting tigers. A maximum of 15 vehicles was permitted per gate each night. However, from December 1st onward, night safaris have been fully discontinued.
Those who have already booked night safaris should take note, as their reservations will be cancelled. Following the Supreme Court order, the PCCF Wildlife Service has instructed that all advance night safari bookings be terminated and refunds issued. Ravindra Mani Tripathi, Field Director of Kanha National Park, confirmed the update, stating, “Night safaris have been stopped as per the Honourable Supreme Court’s order. As directed, the activity has been suspended from November 30th. Refunds will be processed for tourists who made advance bookings, following the official procedure.”
Although the administration has now officially halted night safari activities, several wildlife experts had already raised concerns earlier. Wildlife specialist Sharad Vats mentioned that night safaris can have harmful effects on animals. Strong artificial lights used at night may disturb wildlife, potentially affecting their eyesight or causing temporary blindness. He also added that such activities can interfere with natural forest behaviour and disturb the ecosystem balance. This remains a serious concern among conservationists.
